  • I have been bitten by an animal

    If you or someone you know has been bitten by any animal, report it right away to the Merced City Animal Control. Important steps must be taken to ensure the animal is not sick, and also that you receive proper care if the animal is sick. Call the police department to make a report at 209-385-6905.

  • I have lost my pet

    Please contact Merced City Animal Control at 209-385-4720 with a description. Also, contact the Merced County Animal Shelter at 209-385-7436 to check for your pet.

  • I want to adopt a pet (dogs, cats & rabbits)

  • Are there regulations on the maximum permissible number of pets?

    You may have up to 5 dogs that are over 4 months of age. You may have up to 5 cats that are over 4 months of age. You may have up to 2 poultry, for pet use only. This means 2 chickens or 2 ducks, or one of each.

  • What are the leash laws?

    Dogs must be secured by a leash or secured in a yard at all times.

  • Where can I get my pet spayed or neutered?

    Contact any local veterinarian.

  • Where do I get a license for my dog / cat?

    In order to get a license for your dog you will need a current rabies certificate for each dog you want to license. Take the certificate to the Central Police Station at 611 W. 22nd St. You may license the dog for up to 3 years, depending on how long the rabies vaccination is good for. Discounts apply to senior citizens and also for dogs that are spayed or neutered. Proof must be shown with a certificate from the veterinarian who performed the procedure. You can also check with your local veterinarian, you may be able to obtain a license from them.

    Cats do not need a license.
