The Merced Police Department has a tool that will help residents stay informed and help fight crime in their neighborhoods. The interactive website, CrimeMapping.com went live at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, September 28, 2010.  The Merced Police Department initially used grant funds awarded through the 2009 American Recovery & Reinvestment Act to fund the annual subscription cost of $1,200 for the first three years.

The site allows users to view crime activity near their home, near their work, or even near their child’s school. People can view crime activity on the map as well as create simple reports and charts. CrimeMapping.com also includes an email based crime alert service that allows users to subscribe to receive reports via email regarding crime near their location of choice. There is no charge to view the maps, charts, reports, or to receive the Crime Alerts.  Crime records are uploaded one time each day directly from the Department’s records management system.

The Merced Police Department values transparency in its partnership with the community and believes in keeping the community well-informed. CrimeMapping.com allows the City to accomplish both. Community policing is a proven method for crime prevention and crime reduction and the website empowers City residents to become additional eyes and ears for their neighborhoods.
